New research published in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine has shown that three specific environmental factors may be sabotaging weight loss efforts:

The study followed the temptations of 80 dieters for one week, having the participants chronicle their diet temptations in an electronic diary. These three temptations encouraged people to “give in” about 50% of the time. The researchers concluded that dieting goes beyond “sheer willpower and self-control.”
An article in Health magazine also quoted the study’s lead author, Heather McKee, as saying, “Self-control is like a muscle. The more you use it, the more tired it becomes. If dieters resist temptations all day, by nighttime they may be more vulnerable.”
