Artificial Sweeteners & Weight Loss

Woman Drinking CoffeeIf you’re trying to watch your weight by using artificial sweeteners instead of sugar, you may actually be setting yourself up for diabetes or even obesity. Every person’s ability to handle artificial sweeteners is completely different. For some people, incorporating small amounts of these sugar substitutes will help in weight loss. However, others may be more susceptible to a host of negative side-effects of artificial sweeteners, including:

  • Weight gain (yes, weight gain!)
  • Mood swings
  • Headaches
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • And more

According to one researcher in Israel, fake sugars aren’t digested and can change the way the body breaks down glucose – even raising blood glucose levels. The problems may occur in the intestines where the artificial sweeteners may be absorbed by bacteria, changing how the bacteria behave and leading to weight gain. The bacteria may actually pull energy out of food and store it as fat.

Other studies have shown that artificial sweeteners actually stimulate your appetite and make you want to eat more. Even body core temperature has been shown to decrease, which slows down metabolism.

Some nutritionists call artificial sweeteners “poison,” even though they have been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration. Not all sugar substitutes in foods are obvious; read labels to identify what you are consuming (aceslufame-K, sucralose, saccharin, aspartame, etc.).

Know your body. If you are having trouble losing weight or are experiencing any negative symptoms, you may want to eliminate artificial sweeteners from your diet. And if you do stop incorporating these foods and beverages into your diet, are eating healthy and exercising regularly – but still have stubborn pockets of fat – cosmetic surgery may be an alternative for you.
