Different Types of Liposuction

Liposuction.jpgLiposuction is a common and popular cosmetic procedure. It is used to remove and shape localized deposits of excess fat, improving body contour. Liposuction is performed through small punctures in the skin. A narrow cannula tube is then inserted into the incisions to suction away the fat, allowing precise contouring of desired areas. There are several different types of liposuction procedures and they vary depending on: the location of fat to be removed, the type of fat, the goals of the patient and the cosmetic surgeon's recommendation.

Tumescent Liposuction: Tumescent liposuction refers to liposuction done with injection of a solution that contains local anesthetic, eliminating the need for general anesthesia during the procedure. This process makes the area numb and makes contouring and shaping more accurate. The solution loosens and softens the fat, aiding in its removal.

Ultrasonic Assisted Lipectomy: Ultrasonic assisted lipectomy (UAL) uses sound waves to liquefy fat, making it easier to suction out. This technique can be performed on its own or in conjunction with other liposuction treatments.

SmartLipo: SmartLipo is the least invasive type of liposuction. This technique emulsifies fat with laser energy while tightening tissue. SmartLipo can be used as a standalone treatment or in conjunction with other techniques. This technique is often preferred in patients with diminished skin elasticity since the heat energy used causes collagen fibers to retract, firming skin in the process.

Power-Assisted Liposuction: All liposuction uses negative pressure to remove fat. Using power-assisted liposuction (PAL), however, allows the removal of fat with far less trauma and more efficient contouring. A specialized device causes the liposuction cannula to gently vibrate back and forth, breaking apart the fat deposits for easier removal. Tumescent fluids are often used in conjunction with PAL for optimal patient comfort.

There are several liposuction options available, but no single option will be right for every patient.
