Photos on Display for Plastic Surgery Exhibition
New York City is the location for a new exhibition showcasing the photographic work of Ji Yeo. In her exhibition, Yeo showcases behind-the-scenes imagery of plastic surgery in South Korea. The country is considered the plastic surgery capital of the world. In South Korea, 20 percent of women have had some form of cosmetic work, compared to five percent of American women, according to data provided by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.
In 2013, Brazil performed the most cosmetic procedures overall followed by the United States. However, the plastic surgery industry in South Korea is legendary, where over 2,000 plastic surgeons maintain practices. One clinic has over 300 employees.
According to an article in The New Yorker, two of the main reasons South Koreans get plastic surgery was “preparing for a job,” and “regaining self-confidence.” According to the staff at Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Center in Denver, Colorado, those reasons are also prevalent among Americans seeking cosmetic work. Author Patricia Marx, who wrote the article, theorized that it’s not surprising that a country that had such a strong economic turnaround would embrace cosmetic surgery. After the Korean War, the country made itself over and cosmetic surgery is a further extension of that.
