Surgery Can Help With Large or Protruding Ears
What do President Obama and actor Will Smith have in common? Both were bullied as children for having large and protruding ears.
This is a common problem with children, although more boys suffer from bullying as a result, since girls often hide their ears with their hair. It is an easy problem to fix. A procedure called otoplasty, commonly done on children ages 4 to 14, can correct ear abnormalities.
The procedure typically takes two to three hours. It can be performed on adults as well as children. General or local anesthetic is used, depending on several factors. The patient must wear a bandage home and keep it on for several days. Rest and recuperation normally takes about a week.
