Many people have excess skin after having a baby or significant weight loss, and a tummy tuck is the ideal (and only) way to remove that skin. This surgery can also remove lingering fat and create a whole new midsection. Since a tummy tuck is a major surgical procedure, it does require a considerable recovery time. While the recovery can vary by patient, the information below applies to the majority of tummy tuck patients in Denver. Here is what you can expect regarding tummy tuck recovery time.

Week 1 of Recovery:

It is normal to feel some pain, swelling and bruising in the abdominal area for the first week following tummy tuck surgery. Patients may also feel a sense of unusual tightness. Dr. Serota will prescribe pain medication as needed.

Tubes or drains are often used to help remove any excess fluid or blood after your procedure. Your incision will be covered in dressings and bandages. Bandages will have some degree of fluid and blood on them, but it should not be excessive. Bandages can be changed every other day after the incision area is gently cleaned. You may also be asked to wear a support garment around your abdomen to minimize swelling and support your newly tightened tummy during the healing process. This compression garment should be worn constantly during the first week, other than when showering or laundering.

You should avoid any straining, bending or lifting after your tummy tuck surgery, especially in the early recovery period. Based on the degree of muscle tightening and skin removal from your tummy tuck, you will not be able to stand straight up for about the first week after surgery. You must walk in a bent-over position until you have started to heal and it is no longer uncomfortable to straighten up.

It is important that you get up and walk as soon as you can (even if you are bent over). Walking helps improve circulation, which decreases any tummy tuck risk that may develop, such as potential blood clots.
